| "Dual
Diagnosis overview... Important, yet many rehabs do
not deal with it probably so those addicted don't get
better or relapse!
So What is "Dual
Diagnosis"?
In short it is where sometimes an individual
suffers from some form of an emotional challenge
or illness which can significantly contributes
to their addiction.
A person has underlying other issues other
than what is considered to be
the primary addiction problem. In other words
the simultaneous occurrence of having an addiction,
and at the same time presenting issues could include
symptoms such as various emotional problems they
may or may not be aware of.
Typically they are normally manifested as the
following i.e. extreme anxiety,depression and
mood swings, a loss, identity issues, stress or
hidden anger deep inside about something, sadness,
grief, bipolar disorder which is a form of chronic
depression, and/or generally any clinical mood
disorder. |
 |
Often an addiction is embraced as a way to evade or
avoid what seem to be intolerable or overwhelming feelings.
Indeed many call addictions “feelings diseases.”
Fact is many of those
addicted are often suffering from both an emotional
disorder that has been “wired up” so to
speak and at the
same time, an alcohol and/or drug abuse or dependency
problem. Hence the term 'Dual Diagnosis,'"
The combination of emotional disturbances and for
example alcohol and/or drug abuse is commonplace, yet
it can be puzzling. Often, there is the question of
which came first the addiction or the emotion
disorder; the chicken or the egg and does it really
matter?
Coming
up in just a moment - How MANY addiction
rehabs have caused numerous celebrities
to
re-lapse due to incorrect treatment! |
|
...However,
first a couple of quick important points you need to
appreciate first:
 |
Which Develops First - Substance Abuse
or the Emotional Problem?
It depends, often the emotional problem develops
first. In an attempt to feel calmer perhaps more
confident in situations, or change something i.e.
more peppy, or more cheerful, a person with emotional
symptoms may drink or use drugs, painkillers etc.
Doctors call this “self-medication.”
Frequent self-medication may eventually lead to
physical or psychological dependency on alcohol
or drugs. If it does, the person then suffers
from not just one problem, but two hence dual
diagnosis.
Maybe there was an underlying vulnerability
that precipitated both the emotional problem and
the substance abuse... |
The fact that two illnesses are combined, however,
does not necessarily imply that one is the cause of
the other, even if one occurs first.
In fact it makes little difference whether the "chicken
or the egg" came first…
As one celebrity client who
consulted with us said ," I had bipolar disorder,
known as manic depression, and has not gotten help for
it". It's the reason he has a hard time staying
sober.
To be frank and candid,
the whole issue of "Dual Diagnosis" is rather
conflictive, and it has been addressed from different
points of view.
The definition causing some problem is "Dual
diagnosis" itsef. The term refers of course
to the situation in which the same person suffers
from more than one condition. But we could say
that somebody who has the flu and at the same
time suffers from gastroenteritis has "Dual
diagnosis".
A person may sincerely try to recover from one
illness and not acknowledge the other. As a person
neglects his or her othe issues, that problem
may recur. Over time, the lack of progress toward
recovery on both fronts may trigger feelings of
failure and alienation. Perhaps the greatest
tragedy is the damage that occurs to the individual’s
self-esteem.
Although the emotional
challenges someone is going through may be the
catalyst that activates drug and/or alcohol usage,
the addiction itself is a separate issue, the
drug and/or alcohol usage a current symptom of
that issue. |
 |
The treatment:
The most enlightened approach recognizes that both
must be cooperatively addressed at the same time or
there will be numerous challenges or even no progress
in treating either. Therefore both conditions being
treated as primary, without one being seen as the cause
of the other.
But
wait, here is the scary part....
It is treated by virtually all rehabs in ways that causes
those addicted to so often self-sabotage,
time & time again!
 |
All the rehabs fro our
experiance deal with it by normally prescription
drugs to tranquilizers sleeping tablets etc. That's
plain Riddiculous! And quite frankly frightening...
(Take a look in any
medical book or on the internet and look up the
frightening side effects of the ingredients of
these drugs -just for a start
!)
And in our experiance from the many who have
been treated totally detrimental and will usually
lead back to use of the primary drug or addiction
as you become hooked on these...
as well as more importantly:
Think about it-
Why on earth aren’t these peope instead
of handing out and selling profitable and 'lucrative'
prescription drugs - addressing, dealing and eliminating
the real core issue/s themselves for
each person for goodness sake!!!
Because that takes
way too much time for them...! |
Many celebrities who
had tried this approach said to us -
"Drugs didn't cure it. They simply covered the
underlying issues over and I constantly relapsed!"
Well,
what if you could simply get to, and then eliminate
the root cause of the negative emotions and not need
to use drugs or months/years of so called "therapy"
Well NOW you can!
In a natural, drug-free, non-invasive
system to eliminate the root cause of negative emotions.
