How is an Extreme Fear
or Phobia Caused?
Sometimes, people become afraid of situations and things
that are NOT, in themselves, truly dangerous. These are often
termed phobias. Phobia, by the way is the Greek word for fear,
i.e. a name for any strong avoidance of something unpleasant
in our environment.
A phobia is a mainly irrational fear of something.
It is not an illness. It is not a mental disorder. Nor is
it a lack of will-power, or 'moral fibre', or determination! |

Panic attacks: a
panic attack can be a quite terrifying ordeal unless you understand
what is going on and why it is going on. Panics are very common
and appear to mainly affect people who normally give the impression
of being confident, reliable and dependable.

Did you know that
this paralysing condition may or may not have anything to do with
what you think you’re afraid of?
Often the phobia is a representation of some other issue that
has mistakenly been hooked together by the brain as a safety mechanism.
This association essentially buries the true cause and covers it
by creating a phobia. People may then go through their entire lives
experiencing both the unpleasant effects of the phobia as well as
the limitations of the unknown, underlying issue, never able to
attain the life they desire.
Fears, phobias, anxiety and post-traumatic stress are all the result
of our subconscious mind having learned at some point in the past
that otherwise benign environmental stimuli...(an experience) represents
danger, and are to be avoided at all costs. It somehow linked extreme
fear to a particular thought, sight or situation and the weird thing
is...the fear can also be triggered by things we are not even aware
of that were linked at the time or even make logic sense! And for
some people the feelings of fear are so intense it is effectively
a phobia, that can cause severe panic attacks. This learning is
virtually always the result of Significant Emotional Events (SEE’s),
a form of protective mechanism.
At that moment the unconscious simply decided: "I
need to make sure that we don't have this ever again, so I'll
make sure there is extreme fear around it, so we'll know to
avoid it." And so an irrational fear/phobia is born.
Attaching emotions to situations is one of the primary ways
that humans learn. Sometimes the unconscious just gets the
wiring wrong.

"Fear is that little darkroom
where negatives are developed."
Think of any situation and you can probably find someone who is
afraid of it. These are not necessarily rational fears. If you mentally
exaggerate the danger of a situation or become apprehensive of situations
that others aren't afraid of, you may have a phobia or fear.
It is a learned response, an intense
fear to an object or activity. We often get calls from people telling
us "I know this doesn't make sense, but I can't help myself
and I just want it to stop".
The past is gone—it no longer exists. The
only thing that is “real” is the present—this
exact moment in time. If this is true, then each of us must
possess in the present nothing more than a construction of
what our brains think happened in the past.
Yet, who are we but our collection of memories? If who we
are today—our beliefs, our values, our very identity—is
the sum total of our past experiences, it follows that it
must theoretically be possible to alter who we are today—that
is, our thoughts, our feelings and our behaviors in the present—by
altering this construction of the past at the subconscious
level.
It is literally possible to “scramble” our memories
so that the meaning assigned to past SEE’s also change.
The result of this re-encoding process is that we can now
be free to live based entirely on what's happening here, in
the present, rather than on fears generated by past—often
ancient—learnings that clearly no longer apply. |
